* The US calls for a vote on UN sanctions against North Korea :
“The United States and Japan want the United Nations Security Council to back stricter penalties that would curb oil supplies to Pyongyang, but Russia and China are skeptical. North Korea warned of harsh consequences for the US if the toughest sanctions are enforced,” comments Quartz
* ‘Geopolitical Futures’ is focalised on the questions following sanctions :
“North Korea: The United States will be asking the United Nations to consider new sanctions, including an oil embargo, against North Korea. The measure would also include blocking textile exports from North Korea – the country’s second-largest export after coal – and preventing countries from receiving North Korea laborers – a major source of cash for the regime. A leaked U.N. report indicated that North Korea has been skirting sanctions, exporting $270 million in coal, iron and other commodities in the six months ending in early August. China has reportedly undertaken several other small measures to tighten the screws on Pyongyang, including cracking down on cross-border smuggling, closing customs offices at certain border crossings, and ordering major Chinese banks to end transactions with North Korean entities.
Are these more than token measures? And how is it that Chinese banks are still allowed to work with North Korean entities?
